The medical field is one of the fastest growing segments of the labor market in today’s economy. Surgical Technology is a field that is showing significant growth in the job market. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for surgical technologists will grow much faster than average, about 30 percent across the country.
According to Destani Fuhr, the surgical technology program chair at Herzing University, a certified surgical technologist works alongside the surgeon and other team members. A surgical technologist is the one who maintains a sterile environment and anticipates the needs of the surgeon during various surgical procedures. It is also the responsibility of the surgical technologist to keep track of all instruments and supplies during each procedure from beginning to end.
Ms. Fuhr adds that surgical technology is not for one with a weak stomach, but for a person with strong communication skills, problem-solving skills, the ability to multitask and an eagerness to learn.
