During the Memorial Day weekend, a group of 10 Lourdes University students, faculty and alumni traveled to Guatemala City, Guatemala, for a weeklong Summer Session Outreach Initiative. Made possible through the Lourdes University Department of Campus Ministry, the scheduled mission trip was coordinated by the university’s Tau Scholars, students who mentor their peers and are considered the face of campus ministry.

This marks the second year that Lourdes assisted at Valle de Los Angeles (Valley of the Angels) orphanage. While in Guatemala City, the Lourdes group worked with the children and assisted with some manual labor projects. In addition, they volunteered with Manos Amigas, a local organization.

“The experiences at Valley and working with Manos Amigas gave us a chance to bridge the distance between our cultures, witness their daily life first-hand and put a human face on our brothers and sisters living in Central America,” says Sister Barbara Vano, OSF, Director of Campus Ministry and Service Learning.
